VFP-111 strongly denounces the Obama Administration's recent military assistance agreement with Israel, the largest such aid package in U.S. history. The agreement, providing $38 billion in military aid over the next ten years, will increase tensions in the Middle East. Rather than lessening the possibility of conflict, it may provoke Iran into more intensive military and even nuclear development to match that of Israel.
More importantly, such military support allows Israel, a highly developed economy with its own vast military-industrial complex, to shift funding for its armed forces in order to subsidize more extensive seizures of Palestinian land and expansion of settlements in the West Bank. It not only makes a two state solution more improbable, the military aid treaty will strengthen the apartheid system now brutalizing the Palestinian population, and will also encourage the right wing in the Netanyahu government to implement its dream of ethnic-cleansing as the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Bellingham, Washington's Veterans For Peace Chapter 111 opposes this military subsidy and any other agreement that adds to the militarization of the Middle East, or indeed, of anywhere else in the world.
