Several tens of thousands demonstrated in London Saturday in opposition to the planned renewal of the UK Trident nuclear missile system.
The protest was called by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). A parliamentary vote on renewing Trident, which is housed on four submarines located in Scotland, is to be held later this year.
Demonstrators assembled in Marble Arch, then marched to Trafalgar Square.

VFP-111 Joins Hundreds at the Peace Arch Climate Rally
for Climate Action Day
for Climate Action Day
The Northwest rally on the border came on the eve of the People's Climate March in New York City, said to be the largest climate action rally in history. Veteran For Peace members from many other cities in the United States are joining activists from around the world, including London, Paris, Rio and Vancouver, demanding environmental justice and alternative energy on this largest climate change day of action in decades.

Hundreds of people from both sides of the Canada-U.S. border converged at Peace Arch Park for an international climate change rally on Saturday.
Several members of VFP-111 joined hundreds of environmentalists, First Nations, and scientists that had arrived at the park from all over the Northwest to protest coal, oil and liquefied natural gas projects happening in B.C. and Washington State that they say are fueling climate change.
"The Salish Sea is poised to become one of the largest exporters of fossil fuels in the world," said rally organizer Alexandra Woodsworth, with the Georgia Strait Alliance.
"We're here today to really call out that, to really shed a light on the combined impacts of all of these projects on the Salish Sea, and to come together and say we ... are not going to allow this part of the world to become a global carbon corridor."

VFP and WPJC Join Forces to Oppose Iraq 3.0
Last spring it was looking more and more like the U.S. government would once again take military action in Iraq, so members of VFP-111, along with Whatcom Peace & Justice Center allies, felt it was imperative to get out and be visible in its opposition to any new war in Iraq. And at the same time thousands of anti-war forces – activists with Veterans For Peace, Code Pink, A.N.S.W.E.R. and others - mobilized across the country.
When hundreds of emergency actions were taking place elsewhere to tell the Obama Administration that Americans opposed any US military intervention in Iraq, VFP-111 and WPJC were engaging weekend shoppers at the Bellingham Farmers Market. Peace veterans and local activists successfully distributed more than 500 fliers that instructed concerned citizens to get involved, to call Obama and their Congressional representatives, providing contact information and a script opposing any new attack on Iraq. Our tabling spot on the sidewalk near La Fiamma was the perfect locale for this action, serving as a convenient mini-gauntlet for arriving shoppers, and might even deserve a return performance sometime soon.
